January Birthday Flower: Carnation

I’m not sure the history of how birth month flowers were determined but, I thought I would spend some time talking about the birth flower of the month, January.

According to online sources (lol) if you were born in January then your birth flower is the carnation.

The carnation’ s botanical name is  dianthus carophyllus. It is a perennial plant and comes in many colors such as pink, white, red, and combinations of different colors usually with ruffled petals. It’s recommended to deadhead the flowers to encourage more blooms.

The webster definition of carnation is:

a plant of any of numerous often cultivated and usually double-flowered varieties or subspecies of an Old World pink (Dianthus caryophyllus) originally flesh-colored but now found in many color variations

You often find this flower in blooms at the florist shop. These flowers make wonderful bouquets and colorful bday gifts for a loved one!

That’s all for today. I hope you enjoyed reading about the birth flower for the month of January!

Happy Gardening!
