I recently signed up for a 10 mile race in Huntington Beach, CA. I haven’t run a race in a few months. I’m really looking forward to getting back into a routine where I can stick to a training plan (mostly!) and get back into long distance running shape. The past few months have been challenging and full of change. It’s a story for another time!
For now, the plan to get back in shape to run the 10 miles is to stick to the run calendar I’ve got as much as possible. The important thing that I’ll need to do is pay attention to any niggles or potential pain that may flare up. If I feel anything bothering me I won’t think twice to take it a little easier and even start doing a run/walk train up if needed. I’ve had my share of injuries and know that at this point, being in my 30s, I’m not going to heal up as quickly as I used to. Injuries take me out for sometimes months at a time and I would NOT be happy with that if it were to happen.
The race is September 21st and is along the beach as the location suggests. Not ideal but, my longest run over the past 2 months is just over 5 miles. If I just keep up the training, keep my senses alert for niggles and back off if there are any, and be mentally prepared to do a run/walk type of race, then I know I’ll be just fine and will just enjoy getting out and participating in an organized race again! I love the like-minded runners, the crowds cheering us all on, the flashy medal, and challenging myself to go the distance!
